Contains letters from Maori to McLean with regard to land tenure; in particular, there are warnings not to pay particular individuals for land which they are not entitled to sell, requests for reserves, complaints about non-payment and requests for compensation following omission from original payments.
There are also letters about policing and a request for food for roadmakers.
There are some letters about the disposition of Hawke's Bay and East Coast Maori following the outbreak of armed conflict in other parts of the country, including one letter that provides information to Hawke's Bay chiefs about a brewing conflict involving Nga Rauru and Ngati Ruanui (NB: one of the letters is dated 1869, and deals with Ngati Porou attitudes to Te Kooti; it appears to have been included in this folder by mistake)
