Original artwork for the cover of a menu features a drawing of a small boat on a lake (Lake Pukaki).

A note on the back cover says: "Thanks are due to our Benevolent Department for donating the valuable manhours and materials without which the printing of this menu would have been impossible!"

Ernest Norman Croad joined the Public Works Department in 1945 as a drafting cadet. He later trained as a surveyor and qualified as a civil engineer, working on roading projects for the Ministry of Works. He worked on civil engineering projects at Tokoroa, Tekapo, Pukaki, and the housing division at Waiouru.
