Chief of Staff NZ Army. Born Heathcote, Christchurch. Served as a ranker Wellington College Rifles, in the Wellington Guards. Staff cadet at the Royal Military College, Australia 1911. With the New Zealand Staff Corps, Auckland Regiment NZEF 1914-1917. Served as staff officer for Invercargill and Wellington regimental districts. Later general staff officer at Central Command. Represented New Zealand at the Coronation of King George VI 1937; appointed aide-de-camp to the Governor-General. In 1940 commanded Northern Military District as brigadier. Then went to the Central Military District Wellington.As acting major-general, commanded the 4th New Zealand Division 1942. Served with 2nd NZ Division in the Middle East and Mediterranean 1942-1944. Mentioned in despatches. Became aide-de-camp to the King, Quartermaster-General of the NZ Forces 1945. As Major-General was made Chief of the General Staff 1946. Retired 1949. Died in Cambridge. Description: Album of photographs of family and friends probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell. They include a sequence at the beginning of the wedding of Brian Stewart Geddes, and Audrey Marion (nee Hopkins), on 14th May 1945. Their family, especially their daughters Elizabeth Anne, and Jane Margaret, are photographed as babies, and as they grow. Scenic views include the Gisborne region; and Kawau Island, with a large group in Mr McDowell's party, deep-sea fishing from a launch, showing their catch of hapuka A group of women from the Women's War service Auxiliary at Katikati are seen in two images; and a meeting house at Katikati.
