Description

Shows a monument in the form of a square stone pillar, commemorating German soldiers who fell near Bapaume. It is topped by a stone ball. Near the top is a bas-relief cross with a "W" for Kaiser Wilhelm within it.

Inscription is also copied down on page 57, and reads: "Wir neigen das Haupt vor unseren Toten, Die furchtlos und treu ihr leben boten. Was flerblich war brachten wir hier zur Ruh, Ihr Weift zan betreit der hethiat zu. Den in der Hingebring von Bapaume Ze fallenen kameraden zollt feinen Dank, durch dieses Denkmal das XIV Reserve Korps 1914-1918". Translation given by James O'Grady: "We bow our heads before our dead, who unafraid and true, offered their lives for what was mortal. We brought their bodies here to rest, their spirit to be freed to the Homeland. The comrades who fell in the neighbourhood of Bapaume are worthy of this thanks and this monument. The 14th Reserve Corps, 1914-1918".

The Australian War Museum states that the monument angered the French because it showed a Polish Cross with the initial "W" (for the Kaiser) on it.
