Cemetery, probably Whanganui region

Date: [187-?]

From: Harding, William James, 1826-1899: Negatives of Wanganui district

Reference: 1/1-000053-G

Description: Photograph of a cemetery situated on a hill overlooking a body of water and distant hills, probably the main General Cemetery section of Heads Road Cemetery in Whanganui [or Wanganui] township. The view appears to be taken from a small hill near the Guyton Street entrance. A dirt road is in the foreground, and two blurred figures standing near a fenced grave. The image was possibly taken circa 1870s by the studio of William James Harding, Whanganui. This photograph is identified in Library negative register as Aramoho Cemetery but a Whanganui researcher in 2016 stated that there was no Aramoho Cemetery until 1914-1915. The image may have been taken later than 1870s, by Frank James Denton who took over Harding's studio. Alternatively, this image may show the Old Wanganui Cemetery or the cemetery at Aramoho Marae in Whanganui, now known as Te Ao Hou Marae. Further information from another researcher in 2020 confirmed the location as Heads Road Cemetery. Source of descriptive information - Negative register and inscriptions on negative; and information from researchers. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Physical Description: Glass negative, 6.5 x 8.5 inches Processing information: This record was updated in 2016 and 2020 with information from researchers concerning the name and location of the cemetery depicted..
