Pearse, John, 1808-1882 :Sunkeld, emigrant to N Z [1851]

Date: 1851

From: Pearse, John, 1808-1882: [Album. 1851-1856]

Reference: E-455-f-011-13

Description: A view of a young man, seated on the ship's deck and holding a baby. He wears a hat with a narrow brim and boots. Identification: according to the passenger list for this voyage, 'Sunkeld' is likely to be John Lunckall? aged 35, a farm labourer travelling in steerage with his wife Ann and an infant daughter also named Ann. The surname on the passenger list has been transcribed as Lunckall with a question-mark. Pearse has printed the name clearly but was compiling his album some years later. Neither version of the name appears to be an English surname. Newspaper reports of the period report a John Sunckell arriving with his wife Ann and baby daughter aboard the Duke of Portland and this appears to be the correct form of the name. The image is drawn in black and sepia ink Other Titles - Sunckell Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash, 149 x 86 mm
