Provenance: Executed in Eastern France (Lorraine) in the first quarter of the 16th century. There are two contemporary inscriptions apparently by the scribe, although in slightly different ink, inserted into the text: 'laus christe scripsit frater Iohannes de Malzevilla, 1511' (f.16v) and 'f.Jo.de Malzevilla carme.ta conventus baccareti me scripsit' (f.58v).The Carmelite convent at Baccarat was founded in 1433 by Thierry de Boppard, Bishop of Metz, in 1379. It was suppressed in 1789. On f.17, facing the first inscription by the scribe, is a figure of a kneeling Carmelite friar with his name in a red scroll in the lower border: 'F.[. .].P.d'ARGENT', that is Frere Pandargent, Prior of Baccarat in 1505. Very probably the book was made in the abbey by Friar Iohannes de Malzeville for the personal use of the Prior.

On f.103 is an inscription probably of the seventeenth century, 'Dominus Ferdinandus Carli Petrisanctensis'. On f.102v is a pencil signature, perhaps 'J. Durrie'. There is a cutting from a bookseller's catalogue inside the front cover. Bought by Sir John Ilott.

1 volume(s), Illuminated manuscripts, Parchment, Vellum, 103 leaves (4 blank), bound; 157 x 110mm., Binding: Nineteenth-century Italian blind-stamped calf, spine title 'UFFIZIO'., Decoration: Line-endings in blue and gold and initials (1- and 2-line) in burnished gold or blue, with penwork in dark blue or red throughout.Three- and 4-line initials in red or blue with white tracery on liquid gold or blue grounds introduce the text beneath the three miniatures on ff.30v, 42v and 72v. They have infills of foliate and floral design. Three-line initials on washed gold or red grounds mark divisions elsewhere in the manuscript.There are two historiated initials (3-line) on gold grounds on ff.26 and 28. Three-quarter borders occur on ff.17, 26, 28, 58v, 61v, 63, 64v and 66v; full borders mark divisions of the text on ff.30, 42 and 72. On ff.30, 42 and 72 they are accompanied by miniatures (c.80 x 60mm). For the most part the borders are of conventional early sixteenth-century floral acanthus design with some grounds or partitioned parts being painted a heavy contrasting liquid gold. Subsidiary scenes are included on ff.17 and 30. The border panels of f.26 refer to the events and instruments of the Passion. Colours for both border and miniature decoration are red, grey and blue, with green, beige and white applied more sparingly. Gold is used for highlights.
