Shows left profile of Harris in jacket, waistcoat and tie, seated in armchair smoking pipe and reading book, which he holds in left hand.
Artist identified by monograph signature; the same as that on oil portrait of James Hight reproduced in Ian Carter's "Gadfly; the life and times of James Shelley" (1993) between pages 176 and 177.
The number "58" may indicate the work was exhibited in an art exhibition.
James Shelley was an associate of Walter Harris, although some years older.
Dated by apparent age of subject.
