Leader in the development of aerial topdressing, and initiated trials in aerial fencing and fire fighting. Established the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science in 1953. Description: Collection comprises papers relating soil conservation, aerial top-dressing, aerial fencing, aerial firefighting and other matters relating to agriculture from mid-1930s to late 1960s. Includes papers on his education, and his typescripts for books, articles, film scripts and conference papers. Also surveys, maps, conference proceedings, books, pamphlets, journals and some ephemera. Some correspondence relating to business consultancies. and diaries from overseas work trips. Obituaries and biographical note by his wife. Douglas Campbell graduated MAgrSc in 1931. Taught agriculture at Rangiora and Napier Boys' High Schools while researching soil erosion and conservation. Became first technical officer of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council (established in 1942), and by 1946 he was Senior Soil Conservator for the Ministry of Works. Pioneered aerial topdressing, and developed aerial dropping of lightweight fencing, and aerial firefighting. Wrote articles for agricultural journals, and papers for national and international conferences on soil conservation. After retiring worked as an agricultural consultant.
