Description

View looking along the Hutt Road from Petone towards Wellington. A well-formed road runs along the foot of the Western Hills towards Wellington. The walking figure of a man is at the first bend in the road. Mount Victoria is in the distance on the left, across the harbour

Other Titles - Petone Road looking towards town

A very similar ink and wash drawing by Smith, titled 'Petoni Road looking towards Town', is the New Zealand diary of Mrs Henry Petre, 1842-1844, (MS-1772). The drawing seems likely to be later with its well-formed road in the foreground, and with the 1852 date inscribed on the matching watercolour.
