Shows two Maori women in the left foreground. One is standing, with a baby wrapped on her back beneath her red cloak. The other kneels to lower food into a boiling pool, on a rope. In the background is a carved whare or meeting house.
Name of artist not given.
Maori viewers have noted that the colour red is not normally worn by women, and that the designs on the costume borders and headbands are not typically Maori.
Probably dated just prior to 1934, when it was display in a Tourism and Publicity stand at the Waikato Winter Show. See Archives NZ AAVK W3493, Box 343 photo with 15/327/5/3 aoontated on verso. Previously thought to be dated 1920-1929.
Standing figure is similar to the woman and child whose photograph appears in a Maori calendar for 1933, month of May (Eph-B-MAORI-1933-01-05).
