Description

Tongatapu in January 1643 as recorded by Tasman's artist Isaac Gilsemans. In the left foreground, a Tonga couple are standing and another couple are seated. Two double canoes are beyong them in the bay. In the right foreground, the Dutch dinghys are moored, with sailors manipulating barrels through the water. Further barrels are on shore, guarded by armed Dutch sailors. A dance of welcome is being performed beyond the armed guards and other Tongas are arriving with coconuts. The royal compound and other houses can be seen amongst the vegetation on land.
