Description

This map covers the area from the un-named Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of the River Waikato to the River Waiho [sic] entering the Firth of Thames. Tauranga Harbour is included but Rangiwhara Island at the entrance is not drawn. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands.

A typewritten sheet of explanatory notes is affixed to the map. These state that this map was used in the Maori Land Court held at Fort Britomart, Auckland, in January 1871. The action concerned ownership of the Te Aroha block and was drawn on behalf of the successful claimants.

The orientation of this map faces south.
