Head and shoulders portrait of George Gatonby Stead, circa 1901. Photographer unidentified.

Published in the New Zealand Free Lane, 2 Mar 1955, page 3 with the caption: "Owner, breeder and administrator. G G Stead was a towering figure in New Zealand Turf and bloodstock annals. The roll of winners of all handicaps, classics and near-classics is studded with the names of his horses. He never ran a horse in a hack event. His large-scale importations bulk largely to-day in the Dominion's winning lines. He influenced many of our distinctive methods of managing the sport, notably the relation of stakes to totalisator turnover."
