Scene at Woodlands Station, Motumote, west of Waiau River, Western Southland, Southland, circa 1870s. Shows horses and a plough in the foreground; two houses (and wash house at the back); and native trees behind. People in the photograph, and the photographer, are unidentified.
Source of descriptive information - Name of Station, location, Scope and contents and Historical notes from Library client. Formerly wrongly identified as Woodlands, near Invercargill.
The house at the front is believed to have been gone by the time Malcolm Mouat bought the property in 1893. The second house was lived in by the Mouat family until 1958 with no electricity or running water. It was demolished in December 1996. The wash house, over the back fence in the back yard, formerly housed the copper and the bath tub. It was still standing in December 2011.
