- Description
A Maori waka on the river, looking across to hills, and a niu pole rising above a fenceline on the opposite bank. The pole is almost certainly 'Kemp's Pole', raised by Te Rangihiwinui Kepa (Major Kemp) to show the boundary of a trust area he wanted reserved as Maori land.
The area around the pole is tapu, as it is the site of an ancient village and urupa (burial ground). Raorikia (Maori transliteration of the Biblical city name, Laodicea, Asia Minor) is located in a valley of the Kauarapaoa Stream, a feeder stream of the lower Whanganui River.
