Description: Photographs of Clarke, Graham and Fyfe who first climbed Mount Cook on Christmas Day 1894, with their mountaineering equipment; the sheep dog of James MacKenzie the sheep-stealer; a bullock team pulling wool bales; the Fairlie to Mount Cook coach with John Rutherford driving; the bridge over the river at Lake Tekapo with the hotel next to it; Mount Cook Station, originally built by A Burnett, with a thatched roof and the family outside it; a drawing of the ferry crossing Lake Pukaki and the original accommodation house on the shore; hay-making in front of the Balmoral homestead; the yard of Haldon station surrounded by trees showing the out-buildings and men with dogs; Levels homestead with a man with a hoe and others outside; and a group of men and women picnicking in front of two tents at Governor's Bush in Mount Cook township being the first party conveyed by the Mount Cook Motor Company ca 1880s. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, circa 1907-1911. For information on mountaineering trips taken by Dr Teichelmann, see internet at http://ebenezerteichelmann.blogspot.com/2007/12/teichelmann.html. In 1911 he took an exploratory trip with Alec Graham and Jack Clarke to the head of the Wanganui River (Westland). Image no. 17 shows their camp in the Wanganui River Valley, and image no. 19 shows Alex Graham trying unsuccesfully to ford the Lambert River. The article also mentions that he took many pictures on this trip. Photographs include views of Franz Josef Glacier, Mount Tasman, Mount Cook and David's Dome, taken from Mount Roon; views of the trip taken with Alec Graham and Jack Clarke showing the Lambert River (tributary of the Wanganui), the Lambert Glacier and Mount Lambert; also the area of the Lord River, Mount Lord, the Lord Glacier and Lord Range with Mount Stoddart, Malcolm Peak, Newton Peak and Mount Tyndall. Description: Views, mostly snapshots, many of which show a group of eleven men camping in the Cook River area circa 1920s, taken by unidentified photographers. Other images are very clear portraits, but neither the subjects nor the phtographers are identified. The views of the group camping show the men's arrival at the end of the road in buses and cars, prior to their pushing a trailer filled with camping equipment over a stoney river bed to the campsite, tents erected in bush settings, and several different mountain huts including one A-frame hut and two huts identified as the Havelock Hut and Ball Hut. Jack Pattle is identified as the photographer of the Havelock Hut (no. 29); Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann took photograph no. 30 which shows Jack Clarke, Dr Parker, Rev H E Newton and Billy Batson at Ball Hut in 1902 when they made the first crossing of Graham's Saddle in 1902 (identified from copies at the University of Canterbury). Photograph no. 37 shows a cartoon of "Bergschrund Bill" (possibly Bill Batson?). Photographs no. 31, 33, and 46 show a large group of men having a picnic at a mountain hut circa 1920s (possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club); photographs 39, 40, 41 and 47 show men in military uniform about 1941. Nos 40 and 41 show a combimed reunion dinner of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and New Zealand Alpine Club members in the 2NZEF and RAF Middle East Forces, held Saturday July 26, 1941 at Kings Hotel, Cairo, while no. 39 shows an unidentified soldier and no. 47 is inscribed "All good wishes, John Simpson" presumably both members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club or the NZ Alpine Club. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers. Those named include Miss Marsden (no. 33), E.A. Fitzgerald, J.J. Kinsey, J. Lippe, A.S. Sutton-Turner, a member of Sun Newspapers Ltd (possibly McGregor?), R. Sanders and C. Beken. Two images of an unidentified mountain hut were taken by John Pascoe (in 1931) and Dorothy Pascoe (in 1944) showing the hut which had been in use since 1895, and was completely destroyed by erosion. There are early images (nos. 1-7, 20-22, and 41). No. 1. is a diorama of an ice cave in the Mueller Glacier; no. 2. shows three mountaineers (two older men greeting a younger man, two of whom are carrying ice picks, the man on the right possibly J.J. Kinsey); no. 3. is entitled ""In difficulties" Ollivier carrying Barrow as hor[ses in difficulties]" and no. 6. taken at the same time is entitled "Ollivier carrying Fitzgerald ashore. In difficulties in the Forks Stream", signed J.J. Kinsey and dated 13/7/[18]97 on the back. Nos. 4-5. were taken by E.A. Fitzgerald show Zurbriggen and Clark [i.e. Jack Clarke] on the summit of Haidinger, dated 14/7/[18]97 on the back. Image no. 20. shows five men holding ice-picks, standing in front of a stone wall with a tent behind at Separation Camp at the ehad of the Godley River; image no. 20 shows four men with heavily laden bicycles on a track with mountains behind. No. 41. shows two women wearing large hats sitting in the wire cage above the Hooker River (one possibly Freda Du Faur). One sequence shows aerial photographs of the Southern Alps, some of which were taken by a member of the Sun Newspapers. Another sequence (nos. 23-31) were taken by Arthur Seymout Sutton-Turner, many of which show the effects of storm clouds in the mountains. Image no. 33. (taken by Miss Marsden) shows the foot of the Unser Fritz Falls.
