The letters from Tuta Tamata deal with various questions put by Smith to Tamati; the letters from Hare Hongi contain the whakapapa of pre-Hawaiki settlers in New Zealand, Maori vocabulary, laments, and notes about fake clairvoyants; the letters from Hone Mohi Tawhai contain information about Polynesian Society business, the whakapapa and traditional history of Northern tribes, details about Hawaiki placenames in the Taitokerau area, and information about the Ngati Awa occupation of the Taitokerau.
In addition there are letters from H E Thom, 1919 (2); and letters to and from George M Thomson 1915 (3).
