Okupe lagoon is situated on the northern end of Kapiti Island, at Waiorua, which was the scene of a large battle in 1824 between the original tribes of the region and the Ngati Toa. According to James Cowan who visited the island in 1907 human bones were still visible around the edge of the lake, a gruesome reminder of that days events.
