Description

The waka Ngatokimatawhaorua at sea off Waitangi. Photographed by Evening Post staff photographer Ian Mackley on the 22nd of January 1974.

This 100ft Maori waka was built in Kerikeri during the 1930s, under the direction of Pita Heperi and Piri Poutapu. After the 1940 Waitangi Day events it was gifted to the nation and is housed in the canoe house at Waitangi.

This large waka was being trialled in preparation for New Zealand Day celebrations on the 6th of February 1974. It weighs 20 tons, and is made from a giant kauri trunk. It was constructed especially for the Centenary celebrations in 1940. It is capable of carrying 100 people, 80 of whom are rowers.
