Rioting unemployed workers in Cuba Street, Wellington, being dipersed by mounted and foot police. Photograph taken in May 1932.
Inscriptions: Dramatic police charge routs unemployed demostrators in Wellington. [?] workers and unemployed numbering about 2,000 were put to rout in a lightning two-minutes baton charge by 50 mounted and foot police, under Inspector J Lander, during a mass meeting held in Cuba Street last week. The [?] followed an outbreak of stone throwing by a section of the crowd, which immediately scattered in all directions, may being injured in the stampede for safety. Apart from one man whose leg was broken when he fell from a fence, there were no serious casualties. (Caption below original image)
