Parliamentary Serjeant-at-Arms, Group Captain A J M Manson, and another man in the House of Representatives, with the new Speaker's chair. Photographed by an Evening Post photographer.
The new Speaker's chair is made of English oak, and upholstered in green English hide. It was a gift from the British House of Commons, and was presented by a deputation of MPs from Britain. It was placed in position on the 21st of November 1951 (info from Evening Post, 21 December 1951). This chair replaced the ordinary arm chairs introduced by the first Labour Government in 1935.
