Description

Watercolour of White Island shows view of headland in middle distance, with house and outbuilding at right and cabbage trees and cattle further left. In the distance is a small island.

The Forbury homestead was built by William Henry Valpy in the early 1850s. Forbury was the old name for St Clair, and was named after Valpy's birthplace near Reading,Berkshire. Valpy's widow lived in the house with her brother the Reverend Charles Jeffreys and his family from 1852 until they moved to other Valpy properties in and around Oamaru in the 1860s.
