- Description
Photograph number eighteen in manuscript. 'This is up forward in the Ypres Salient, counter battery work. You will note the gunners along the roadside till the bombardment is over, then they go back and retaliate. Sometimes their guns have gone, like the one you see with the H.E. The two men you see in the foreground are Sgt. Dent and Jimmy Fettis - they are waiting for a stampede to take the corner. Transport horses are trained, they know they have to break down from a gallop to turn the corner. That's where the boys step in, two of us are standing by the camera, on another corner, in case Dent misses. Note the eighteen pounder shell cases to be added to the pile you see in the Dump photo. The gun is at the left, just off the photo.'
