Shows a portrait of a well-dressed young man, in tartan waistcoat, black cravat, long green jacket and white trousers, standing beside a bookcase and table, with his hand resting on a partially rolled map of New Zealand.
The subject drowned in the Wairoa River near Nelson on 14 August 1842. This work was painted posthumously from a miniature held by the family in England.
The original miniature on which this portrait was based is likely to have been drawn prior to 1842, the year that William Curling Young came to Nelson New Zealand.
