Description

Manuscript map with topographical features that has three maps and one diagram on one sheet, showing the major landing, in three phases, of Australian military infantry at Ari Burnu, 23 April 1915 and the evacuation from land to sea, 20 December 1915, of ANZAC troops from Brighton Beach, Anzac Cove, North Beach and towards Suvla Bay. The landing maps are numbered 2 and 3. Number 1 is the diagram. All show aspects of the landing phase. Number 1 is a diagram of the formation of the principal troop transportation ships and the warships protecting them. Twenty two are named and their location shown. The location of the air observation balloon, Monica, is also shown. Number 2 shows the position of the twenty two, named warships and troop ships and the air observation balloon, off land at Ari Burnu. The British and Turkish front battle lines at 20 December 1915 are identified running from Gaba Tepe to Suvla Bay. The names of battle sites are also shown. Number 3 shows the landing routes taken by the Australian battalions, including the names of their commanding leaders, from the landing craft to the beaches and into the hinterland. Relief shown by contours and spot heights are drawn on this map. Both these maps contain a scale. The third map shows the evacuation, 20 December 1915, from North Beach, Anzac Cove, Brighton Beach and Asmak Dere which is towards Suvla Bay. Battalion names or numbers and their locations are shown in red ink on the land along with valley names, battle areas, enemy troop locations and the British and Turkish front battle lines. The position and names of eleven evacuating ships and unidentified steam boats and cutters are shown relative to the land. The map scale is also provided. All the general information on the three maps and the diagram is written in French.
