Porter, Harry, 1894-1993

World War I veteran. Harry Porter joined the Auckland Mounted Rifles, went to Egypt and took part in all the major engagements of the Sinai and Palestine campaigns with only two minor wounds (he also contracted malaria near the end of the war). He stayed on as part of a peace keeping force, arriving home at the end of 1919. Received a rehabilitation farm. Army No. 13-3067.

Description: Details of family background and growing up in Maungatawhiri Valley, also Territorials, enlistment, Mount Cook barracks, training as a 'semi-vet' to care for horses. Recalls voyage to Egypt on 'Aparima' - a horse boat, the deaths, his duties caring for the horses. He joined the Mounted Rifle Brigade at Hill 70 and describes his training and the conditions at camp and the Battles of Rafa, Magdhaba, Gaza, Tel el Fara, the 2nd Battle of Gaza, Richon Le Zion and Ankara with reference to duties 'boundary riding'. Recalls raid on Surafend, also Jerusalem, Jericho, West Bank, Jordan Valley, 1st Battle of Amman, Battle of Damia and the 2nd Battle of Amman. Gives details of the Wazir, recreation, Cairo, venereal disease and malaria. Returned to New Zealand in December 1919 on the 'Ulimaroa' after being in the peace-keeping force. Went onto a rehabilitation farm at Waitakaruru and farmed for the rest of his working life. Recalls the Depression and its effects. Gives views on Anzac Day.
