Hansen, Percy, 1901-1993

Began his working life as a farm worker in Taranaki, 1912-1920. In 1921 he became a tramway employee in Wellington. Early in his career he was the conductors' representative on the Management Committee of the Tramways Union, and later became a Trade Union Secretary.

Description: Percival Andrew Hansen gives details of his family origins in Denmark, his father's occupation and his maternal grand-parents' joinery business near Te Aro School. Talks about the death of his father from appendicitis and the difficult circumstances for his family. Recalls his first work, as a child, as a paper boy for the Dominion newspaper and the value of self reliance. Left school ca 1912 and worked in Taranaki as a farm labourer and talks about that experience. Refers to his marriage in 1920 and in 1921 joined Wellington tramways. Describes early involvement with Tramways Union as conductors' representative on Management Committee. Description: Letters mainly addressed to Susan Skudder at Waikato University, written in response to letters from her or advertisements in journals regarding the experience of New Zealanders in response to the Spanish Civil War. Some letters are from people who were involved in the response, or who were active at the time; others are from librarians and historians responding to her requests for guidance and assistance. Some letters include arrangements for interviews or visits to repositories. Letters from Bert Roth include photocopies of items he thought of interest to her research. Two letters are addressed to her father, Lewis Arthur Skudder, from his colleague Bill Girling-Butcher; another is addressed to her thesis supervisor, Dr. Laurence Barber. One letter dated August 1970 is from Renee Shadbolt to John Shennan, an earlier researcher into New Zealand and the Spanish Civil War.
