- Description
The signing over of ownership of Lake Wairarapa from Wairarapa Maori to the Crown, at Papawai Pa. At the centre of the table sits Judge Butler handing a cheque to Purakau. On the judge's right is Sir James Carroll and on his left is Takarangi Meta Kingi with Mr Goffe standing behind him. Tamahau Mahupuku sits on the ground to the left of the table. Many other prominent Wairarapa Maori leaders are also shown. On the reverse of the photograph is a newspaper article about the event which includes further names. Taken by an unknown photographer on January, 1896.
Papawai Pa was the seat of the Maori Parliament in the 1890s; it subsequently fell into disrepair following World War One
