Description: 8 images of hotels including one of Porirua Hotel in the distance beyond a scattering of houses, a small church and a Shell station. Three are of a bad tram accident at the corner of Webb Street and Taranaki Street where a Thorndon tram went right through the premises adjacent to the Napier-Wellington Transport Co Ltd. Police and passers-by are looking on and workmen are trying to clear the debris. The last image is of what may be a nurses' hostel at Wellington Hospital. Photographer unidentified. Outlines family background - father, Walter Clark, a builder and bricklayer, subcontracted for the Hunter building, Victoria University during the war and, with his brother, built the first State houses in Christchurch. Also built Queen Mary extension to Hanmer Hospital. Talks about the Depression (1930's). Discusses relationship with father; religion; politics; schooling and discipline. Recalls being called up for World War II in first territorial ballot, September 1940 and being sent to Dunedin Racecourse for training. Recalls that because of threat of invasion by Japanese, all racecourses were converted to military camps. In 1942 was called up in overseas ballot and went to Egypt, repatriated to England and returned to New Zealand in 1946. Describes meeting his wife who was in the WAAFS in England and marriage in 1946. Recalls joining Customs Department, Wellington 1947 and outlines his career until retirement in 1981. Recalls first visit to Wellington via train to Te Aro Station; father's dislike of rugby; chores and home activities; discipline; religion; politics, with reference to Dick Seddon; housework; schooling, with reference to becoming the first bugler in the school band; method of carrying schoolbooks bound by leather strap and first job as a general help for Dr Godfrey of Waipukurau before starting work as message boy at Waipukurau Post Office at the age of 14. Describes the post office bike. Mentions move to the Exchange and in free time, practising morse which led to being sent to the Telegraph School in Oamaru on a three months training course, reaching 30 words per minute. Mentions Bill Payne from Masterton. Mentions the `Mareroa'( Lyttelton ferry). Talks about World War I, joining up in 1917, slightly under age, getting into the Canterbury Regiment, training at Featherston along with other signallers and then by foot to live under canvas at Tauherenikau. Recalls the forge, bellows and various tools. Maternal grandfather, Mr Sutherland, born New Zealand and returned to Scotland where mother was born. Recalls mother's claim that Sutherland Falls was named after grandfather. Refers to Depression. Memories of childhood include: chores; education - Dannevirke Primary and Dannevirke High School, with reference to teachers, A G Tait (headmaster), Hugh Henderson (well known national rugby coach), Dave Lindsay (a New Zealand swimming champion) and Arthur Soundy (?)
