Born in Lower Hutt. graduated from Petone Technical College and University of Victoria, Wellington.

Secondary school teacher (Onslow College, Wellington) from 1967; until becoming a school inspector in 1981. Active in the PPTA and in electoral reform; stood for Labour (NZ Biographies 1986 v7 p25).

Married Margaret (Tilly) Neilson Hunter (1929-2011) in 1950, and later was married to Pat Piper.

Flew P40 Kittyhawk fighters and Corsairs with No. 21 Squadron RNZAF during World War Two. Served as flight sergeant and warrant officer in Green Island, Bougainville, and the eastern side of New Britain.

Description: The collection reflects the wartime, recreational and political activities, and interests of Pip Piper. It includes notes, minutes and papers related to Post Primary Teachers' Association from the 1950s to the 1980s, along with papers and news clippings relating to Electoral Reform Coalition campaign in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Also included is a minute book for the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Association and one for the New Zealand Technical School Teachers' Association. The material related to Pipers’ war time service include papers photographs, correspondence, log books and ephemera. It covers his service in the Green Islands and New Britain, Papua New Guinea in the 1940s, along with material related to commemorations in the 2000s. The collection also includes: photographs of tramping and mountaineering in New Zealand in the 1940s and 1950; papers relating to Piper’s political activities at university; and copies of his Security Intelligence Service records. He was also involved in the Wellington branch of the Electoral Reform Coalition from the late 1980s.
