Chazal, Antoine, 1793-1854

French engraver, and painter of flowers and fruit. He was a pupil of Gerard van Spaendonck. 'Chazal ... was a versatile artist, for besides his botanical work, he also painted historical and religious subjects and decorated porcelain and enamel. He ... collaborated with J. G. Pretre and other artists in a splendid unpublished volume of paintings of crocuses, made for the French boatanist Jacques Gay, and now in the Library at Kew' (Blunt & Stearn, p. 209). Responsible for converting Jules le Jeune's drawings of peoples and landscapes encountered during the Pacific voyages of Duperrey into fine watercolours, ready for the engravers to copy. A rare publication, for which he was responsible, was 'Flore pittoresque, ou recueil de fleurs et de fruits peints d'apres nature, dedie aux dames, par A. Chazal, eleve de M. van Sapendonck. (Paris, 1818-1825). The Moosnick Medical and Science Museum at Transylvania University in the U. S. A. holds 41 watercolours of pharmaceutical plants, commissioned from Chazal in 1839. They also hold a photograph of a miniature portrait by Chazal of Robert Peter, the professor who commissioned the paintings.
