Four pou tokomanawa, or post figures, in front of Heretaunga, a carved house at Taradale. Photograph taken in 1889 by William Williams.
The figure second from left was part of the exhibition "Te Maori: Maori art from New Zealand collections" that travelled to the United States of America in 1984.
According to "Te Maori: Maori art from New Zealand collections" edited by S M Mead (Auckland, Heinemann, 1984), the figure second from left belonged originally to a house that stood in the vicinity of Pakowhai, near Clive, and was later kept, along with other poutokomanawa carvings, in the Heretaunga house at Taradale.
"Carved Maori houses of the Eastern districts" by W J Phillipps (Records of the Dominion Museum, vol 1, no 2, October 1944) identifies another photograph of this house (held by the library at 1/1-025817-G) as "Heretaunga, at Pakowhai, near Napier".
These pou tokomanawa are the private property of the Airini Donnelly Family Trust.
