Description

Shows the text of verses: the first from Britain summoning its Sons to help the Mother Country, Britain, in its time of need; and the second a response from the Sons.

The text is as follows:

The call: Foregather Sons of Empire, from corners far and wide, / Your Mother Country needs you, for the Teuton in his pride / Has called forth the Dogs of War, and Europe would bestride / With Carnage and with Blood. / Foregather Sons of Empire, with all your power and might,/ The Mad Monarch and his Junkers have challenged you to fight; / Then shew them what you're made of, and God defend the Right / For Justice and for Good.

The Response: We have heard the Parent call from near and distant shore, / We hasten to the Banner, as we have done of yore, / Our cause is just, and fight we must, peace and freedom to restore. / Your call is nobly amswered, from Prince to Peasant's son, / Your Empire's Sons are with you and will stand alike as one, / To do or die our Motto, until the work is done.

The verso contains a handwritten message from Kate Nelson to "you young soldier boy".

Used in Katherine Mansfield-related exhibition, "Hearts & Minds" in 1988.
