Description

Half-length frontal portrait of New Zealand-born artist and illustrator, Harry Rountree. Mr Rountree is dressed in a sports jacket and yellow pullover.

The artist died in 1937, according to information supplied by the donor's husband, AT13/14/1 24 August 1994.

Harry Rountree made his name as an illustrator of around 100 children's and adults' books in England, where he arrived in 1901.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - A. Hayward [in brown brushpoint]

The portrait was painted in St Ives, where both artist and subject lived. The artist was a friend of the subject's and was a fellow-painter.
