Born England. Son of William Swainson (1789-1855) and his first wife Mary Parkes (1794-1835). Remained in England when the rest of the Swainson family came to New Zealand. Brother of William John Swainson (1824-1887). Married Helen Charlotte, née Whitehouse, Apr 10 1860. Had three sons and six daughters, two of whom married. Lilian's daughter, Mrs Janet Leeper sold a group of William Swainson's drawings and the diary of Henry Gabriel Swainson to the Library in 1966
