- Description
New Zealand soldiers sit eating lunch out of mess tins after an attack in France towards the end of World War I. They appear to be in a garden of a French dwelling near the town of Solesmes. Photograph taken 28 October 1918 by Henry Armytage Sanders.
According to J Cowan (in "Maori in the Great war,"page 150) Solesmes was the first village occupied that had civilians living in it. Hence the vegetables in the garden.
