Dorset, John, 1807-1856

Came to New Zealand in the 'Tory', having been appointed principal surgeon to the New Zealand Company. Brother of William Dorset (1802-1877) who succeeded John as Member of the Provincial Council after his death. Early Wellington doctor, lived Lambton Quay. The first surgeon at Wellington Hospital (then sited where Wellington Girls' College now stands in Pipitea Street). Represented Wellington in the Provincial Council and was appointed provincial surgeon. Buried in the family plot at Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington. [The work then] passed by direct descent in the family of Dr Dorset", until it was sold in 1979. In fact the surgeon was Dr John Dorset, brother of Mr William Dorset.

Description: Shows a still dark green river with a virgin kauri forest, low scrub and flax on its far bank. In the centre of the view is a row-boat, with Colonel William Wakefield in top hat seated in the stern, trailing an oar. The other occupants of the boat are a Maori named Te Whare, a Rotuman named Saturday, Dr George Robinson, Dr John Dorset and Charles Heaphy. Heaphy is thought to be the fourth from the right, the young man with brown hair and a moustache. There are several ducks on the river to the left. The scene is almost certainly the upper Wairoa River, as described by Colonel William Wakefield ' Higher up, where the river narrows to the breadth of the Thames at Kew, both sides presented magnificent forest - some entirely of kauri in a state of the greatest profusion' (quoted in The unknown Kaipara by Brian Byrne, p. 166). Shows an incident that occurred after the grounding of the Tory on 19 December 1839. Painted after the event and dated 1840. See Wakefield, E. J. Adventure in New Zealand, vol. 1 p. 156ff. The boat was being rowed from Te Kopuru up the Wairoa River. Description: View from Clay Point (the bank above the junction of modern Willis Street and Lambton Quay), with the New Zealand Company flag flying, looking north along the beachline (Lambton Quay) towards a sandspit (Midland Park), past the low hill with the house of Colonel William Wakefield (the site of The Beehive today) to Thorndon, with Pipitea Pa close to the point of land on the waterfront in the distance. There are several ships in the harbour, the largest being the "London". The clearings in the bush on Tinakori Hill are Maori potato plantations. On the beach are a cart being drawn by four bullocks, other carts, small boats and several men. The original for the lithograph "Part of Lambton Harbour in Port Nicholson, New Zealand, comprehending about one third of the waterfront of the town of Wellington." (C-026-001). A key published to the lithograph identifies the names of several of the ships and the names of most of the owners of the properties along the beachline. The names supplied on the key (from the nearest point in Lambton Quay to the more distant northern part of the view) were Messrs Willis Storehouses, Mess.rs Wade's storehouses. Losack's Store.
