Maitai (Ship : 1892-1916)

Mail and passenger ship. 3393 grt. Built 1892 for the New Zealand & Australasian Steam Ship Co, London (J Huddart, manager) under the name 'Miowera' (1892-1907) and used on the Trans-Pacific mail run, 1892-1893; from 1893-1899 owned by the Canadian Australian Royal Mail Line, London; from 1899-1908 owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co., with the Union Steam Ship Co as joint owners from 1901; 1908-1916 fully owned by the Union Steam Ship Co, with her name changed to Maitai in 1908. Wrecked at Avaroa, Rarotonga on 25 December 1916, after dragging anchor and drifting onto the reef on a passage from San Francisco to Wellington. Later used as scrap metal in the Rarotongan contribution to the National Patriotic Fund for the war effort. See "Crossed flags" by W A Laxon ... [et. al]
