Dittmer, Wilhelm, 1866-1909

A Hamburg-born artist. He was resident in New Zealand between 1898 and 1905. In December 1899 a chromolithograph portrait of his was reproduced in the New Zealand Graphic. Listed as an Auckland artist in Wises Post Office directory in 1900. Worked in Auckland, Taupo, Wanganui and Wellington. He probably returned to Germany in 1905. In 1905 and 1906 two further chromolithographs, both portraits of Maori, were published by the Christchurch Press. In 1907, in Germany, he published Te Tohunga, a collection of Maori legends which he had compiled and illustrated in art nouveau style. He died in Hamburg.

Description: Head and shoulders frontal portrait of Major Kemp in uniform. He is shown with a full beard, and the New Zealand War Medal suspended from his jacket. Appears to be based on a studio photograph of Te Rangihiwinui, in about 1876, the year he received the New Zealand War Medal. See PA2-2562. Dittmer arrived in New Zealand in 1898, the year of Te Rangihiwinui's death. Description: Portrait of Maori chief Te Heuheu V, holding a mere. He is seated in front of an elaborately carved doorway. The oil painting on which this print is based is in the collection of Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, Wellington Extended Title - Supplement to: New Zealand illustrated, the Christmas number of the Weekly Press, 1905. The following year, the 'Weekly press' Christmas supplement portrait was of Te Heuheu Tukino V's wife, Te Rerehau Kahotea (now at C-067-002).
