Greenwood, Mary Field, 1835-1928

Born 18 July 1835, eldest daughter of Sarah Greenwood and John Danforth Greenwood. Had her portrait painted at the age of 16 in 1852. Moved to Wellington in 1868 and established a school for girls in Wellington Terrace (now called The Terrace). The Terrace School was run by Mary and her sisters until their retirement in 1886. Died 22 November 1928 at New Plymouth. Governess, teacher, social worker. Daughter of John Danforth Greenwood and Sarah (née Field). After acting as a governess to the children of Colonel Haultain, Mary spent a period helping her mother with teaching at `Woodlands House'. In 1868 she moved to Wellington and bought a house on the Terrace where she ran a successful school for young ladies with her sister Ann acting as housekeeper and matron to assist with the board-pupils. Her sister Ellen joined her as a partner and opened a second school for day pupils. Mary was a tireless social worker. She was associated with the Dorcas Society, Two Garment Society and District Visitors Society. On her retirement Ellen took over the school and Mary returned to Nelson where she built a house.
