German explorer, geologist, writer and founder of the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch (1870). Married Mary Dobson in 1863. Haast is buried in the cemetery at Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, Christchurch. (See Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, 1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p. 167-169)
