Collection comprises family correspondence, journal notes and printed material. Much of the correspondence deals with Charles Baker's role in the Church Missionary Society and general life in colonial New Zealand. Includes some Maori correspondence, notes on the Treaty of Waitangi and two lithographs of Wellington City, 1841.

Charles Baker left England in 1827 to join the Church Missionary Society in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Married Hanna Maria Bailey. 13 children. Stationed at Kerikeri, Waimate, Paihia, Waikare, Tolaga Bay and Tauranga. Retired to Auckland.

Description: Folder comprises two lithographs. These lithographs are part of three sections that make up the full panorama. These two sections depict a panoramic view from the sea of Wellington a year after settlement by Pakeha, showing named houses, businesses and ships, drawn from on board the ship London. These are the first two sections of the panorama and numbers the properties, ships and businesses 1 to 42. Description: Folder comprises of five sets of documents in Maori. One letter includes a fair copy transcription. Also one waiata `He waiata aroha'. Includes drafts of a letter from Waiapu Maori (possibly members of Anglican Mission?), April 26, 1856, to Auckland merchants. Expresses concerns over dealings with Pakeha merchants, particularly in regard to the delayed delivery of goods in a transaction involving wheat. Document recording restitution for an incident involving a horse and cart, dated 18 April, 1857. Note attached to main witnessed document addressed to Te Peka (Baker?). Handwritten transcription of various Bible verses in Maori commencing with Luke 18. Written in a regional dialect that uses `w' instead of `wh'. He waiata aroha. Includes the phrase `Te murau a te tini, te wenerau a te mano' which is referenced in Nga Moteatea (by Ngata) 1929, p212. Letter dated 14 February, 1862. To Te Puni from Te Peka (Baker?). An enquiry about lost goods (possibly bits and bridles?) from Minister Harawira's (Hadfield?) cart along the windy road near Ngauranga. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Physical Description: Mss
