Description

This is the Glossa Ordinaria on St Matthew's Gospel, assembled by Ralph of Laon. The Gloss here occurs only on the twelfth-century leaves, Matthew 4:17 to 17:22 (see Manion).

Physical Description: Vellum, 78 leaves (one blank), plus 2 medieval flyleaves (erased medieval documents), 267 x 168mm. Single column of biblical text, 20 lines, ruled in blind, central column written space c.188 x 55mm, gloss written without ruling between the lines and in both outer margins within total written space of 188 x 148mm, written in brown and dark-brown ink in 3 sizes of a regular rounded romanesque bookhand, each gloss preceded by a tiny paragraph mark like a capital gamma in Greek; no decoration; the replacement leaves also 20 lines, ruled in brown ink, written space 188 x 56mm, written in a later (probably fifteenth-century) Italian disjointed bookhand in conscious imitation of a romanesque script, capitals touched in red, small initials in red or blue, no gloss.

Provenance: Executed in Italy between 1125 and 1175. Sold at Sotheby's 12 November 1929, lot 360, to March. Bought by Albert Clemas and sold by him to the British and Foreign Bible Society of New Zealand in 1933.

It is in scrollwork design with acanthus and other leaves drawn in black and coloured in red and blue; all but this letter of the word 'Liber' is painted vertically in a fifteenth-century hand in blue with penwork in red.
