Description

The papers include correspondence between the married Churton sisters, notably letters between Kate Heaphy and Anna Marvin. These letters describe colonial life in New Zealand as well as passing on family news. Later correspondence is between the Marvin family and Horatio Gordon Robley, the artist and ethnologist, who writes on the subject of Maori art. Collection also includes illustrated letters and sketches, which have been transferred to Drawings and Prints (E 402 1-25), and photographs, which have been transferred to the Photographic Archive (PA Coll 1526 and PA Series 1:Q:320).

Arrangement: The correspondence is in two divisions firstly, between Anna Marvin and her sisters (notably Kate Heaphy, wife of the surveyor Charles Heaphy), and secondly, between Anna Marvin and her family with the artist H G Robley.

The family tree includes the New Zealand branch of the Marvin, Heaphy and Churton families. Anna Marvin was Captain Marvin's Great Grandmother.
