Milner, Ian Frank George, 1911-1991

Son of Frank Milner, Rector of Waitaki Boys' High School. After graduating from Canterbury, Milner went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Lectured at the University of Melbourne 1940-1944, then served in Australian External Affairs. An Australian Royal Commission into Espionage in 1955 implied that Milner, a communist, had handed classified information to the Russian government. After briefly working for the UN Secretariat Milner became a lecturer in English at Charles University in Prague in 1951. In 1971 he returned for a year as a visiting professor of English at the University of Otago and revisited in the early 1980s to research a biography of his father. Milner, with his wife, Jarmila, translated modern Czech poetry and had 10 books published. Milner was interested in New Zealand literary affairs and corresponded with New Zealand writers and academics. He died in Prague.
