Anglican cathedral of Wellington Diocese. The building on Molesworth Street was designed in 1938 by Cecil Wood, a Christchurch based architect. The intention was for the cathedral to be a project for the New Zealand centennial in 1940. The Second World War, rising costs, and post war building restrictions delayed the beginning of construction. The foundation stone was laid Queen Elizabeth the second in 1954, and construction began in 1955. On the 10th of May, 1964, the ecclesiastical functions of the previous cathedral building (now known as Old St Paul's) were transferred. (Information from `Old St Paul's' by Dallas James Moore, 1986, & `Old St Paul's', published by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, 1976.) The decision to start raising money to complete the building was made in 1992. The completed cathedral was dedicated in 1998.
