Savage, John, 1770-1838

Came to Sydney in 1803 to work as Assistant Surgeon, and then Surgeon for Port Dalrymple. In June 1805, he was courtmartialled for not having attended a settler's wife in childbirth, and he returned to England to clear his name. The voyage detoured to the Bay of Islands for ship repairs, and here Savage gathered the information for his book "Some account of New Zealand" (1807). The courtmartial was overturned in 1806. He went on to work for the East India Company and died in England. (see notes in letter from Peter Walker, AT 13/14/1, 10 October 2001).
