Formed in August 1914 from the Territorial Force units in the Wellington Miltary District. Made up of one squadron each from three regiments, the 2nd Queen Alexandra's Wellington-West Coast Mounted Rifles Regiment, the 6th Manawatu Mounted Rifles Regiment, and the 9th East Coast Mounted Rifles Regiment. Assigned to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, New Zealand and Australian Division.
