Description: Shows full-length portrait of Sir George Grey, sometime Governor of New Zealand, standing with his left hand resting on papers at his desk at right, and with a pamphlet rolled in his right hand. He wears a high collar and cravat, cark jacket, lighter waistcoat. Two books stand resting against the side of the table, and there is a wooden seat at the left. Cataloguing details taken from the entry for this print, on NZBN (abn92-382238), but with attribution for the engraving to Samuel William Reynolds the younger (not the elder). Description: Captain Bligh standing in a small rowboat at the water's edge on the right, with two sailors steadying the boat. He watches as a group of Tahitians lift a young breadfruit tree in a small wooden tub towards the boat, with further saplings lined up to be transferred. A fruiting breadfruit grows on the left among banana palms and other tropical plants. A central figure, a Tahitian chief in a long white robe and draped hat, directs procedings. The rigging of one of Bligh's ships, the Providence or the Assistant, is visible in the right background. The central Tahitian figure appears to be based on Sir Joshua Reynolds' portrait of Omai. Omai died in 1780, well before Bligh's visit to Tahiti for breadfruit transplanting.
